"In the past years, our City has waged an aggressive war against AIDS. Our needle exchange programs have cut new infections by one third. We have taught our children how to protect themselves and provided condoms in schools to help them. We have virtually eliminated the transmission of AIDS from mothers to children, and we have sent community care vans into our neighborhoods to spread hope beyond our hospitals. Together, we have fought hard and well, but the battle is not yet over.
"AIDS still affects thousands in our City and State, and apathy still threatens our success. New Haven's strongest ally in this fight is the dedication of its people, who volunteer their time, services, and money to defeat the AIDS epidemic. I want to thank everyone involved in the AIDS Walk, from organizers to sponsors to participants. With your help, I know that this is a fight New Haven can win."
